Recently, China Southern Power Grid’s Hainan 500 kV main grid project has started construction. The project will use new generation technology in planning, design, construction and other aspects to create my country’s first 500 kV provincial digital grid.

With the further advancement of the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port, the scale of Hainan’s power load has increased significantly, and the load characteristics and distribution will undergo major changes, placing higher requirements on the reliability and adaptability of the power system. To this end, China Southern Power Grid Corporation invested approximately 5.2 billion yuan to build the Hainan 500 kV main grid project, and the registration will be completed in early 2023. The project is included in the national “14th Five-Year Plan” power development plan and the major project of Hainan Free Trade Port, and is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2025.

Hainan’s 500 kV main grid project includes four projects: Yecheng power transmission and transformation project, Changhua power transmission and transformation project, Sanya power transmission and transformation project and Changjiang nuclear power phase II access system project. It is planned to build three 500 kV power substations. Five new 500 kV main transformers were built, with a total transformation capacity of 3.75 million kVA. 838 kilometers of 500-kilovolt transmission lines were newly built, passing through 14 cities and counties including Haikou, Sanya, Danzhou, Qionghai, Wanning, and Dongfang, covering the entire island with one stroke, forming a complete “kou” shape Ring network architecture.

The Hainan 500 kV main grid project will fully integrate new generation digital technologies such as “Cloud Big Object Mobile Intelligent Chain” through the entire life cycle of planning, design, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance, and build a digital grid panoramic “one picture” management and control platform, striving to Create my country’s first provincial 500 kV backbone digital power grid benchmark.

It is reported that after the “mouth” shaped ring network structure is completed in 2025, Hainan will also build a total of 7 500 kV substations before 2030, forming a 500 kV “sun” shaped ring network around the island.
