Energy Storage System (ESS) can store electrical energy and release power whenever required. Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is the mainstream type, composed of battery clusters, DC panels, power conversion system(PCS), AC panle, battery management system(BMS) and power management system(PMS) control systems. It charges during off-peak electricity periods or when renewable energy output is surplus, and discharges at peak consumption moments.

Energy Metering for ESS

There are two types of energy meter in ESS. They are DC energy meter and AC energy meter.

DC energy meters are installed hierarchically in the DC panels. The main DC bus meter accounts overall charge & discharge energy for efficiency calculation and fault prevention. Branch DC meters for battery racks/strings diagnose faulty batteries, while a energy meter on the PCS DC side measures converter losses individually.

Revenue-grade AC energy meters in the AC panel settle electricity bills, cross-verify system efficiency with DC data, and support PMS to realize peak shaving, arbitrage and grid services.

Insulation Monitoring for Energy Storage System

Insulation monitoring devices protect two core sections of energy storage systems. For inverters inside PCS cabinets, they monitor AC & DC ungrounded power systems and are classified for three power levels: ≤100 kW, ≤1 MW and ≥1 MW, effectively preventing ground faults and fire risks. Our insulation monitoring devices are also arranged inside battery containers to secure battery clusters.

Earth Leakage Protection for ESS

Earth leakage relays are applied in PCS cabinets and battery containers of energy storage systems. Fitted inside PCS cabinets, residual current monitors detect and locate ground faults on conversion equipment live, reduce unexpected outages and prevent harmonic-caused false tripping for AC & DC grounded systems. Mounted in battery containers, these earth leakage relays monitor grounding cable degradation, protect container grounding connections and eliminate hazardous potential voltage on battery containers.

Arc Flash Protection for ESS

Blue Jay arc flash protection systems, made up of arc flash relays and arc flash sensors, are deployed across different sections of energy storage systems.

DC distribution panels and PCS cabinets use both sensors and relays: arc flash sensors detect arc flashes in real time, while arc protection relays trip power instantly to extinguish arcs and safeguard equipment. Battery DC cabinets only require arc sensors to monitor potential arc faults. Battery containers feature full arc relay-and-sensor assemblies that detect arcs and cut power rapidly to stop arcs from igniting battery fires.
