Three Types of Energy Meter Accessories
Energy meter accessories are essential components for accurate and reliable power measurement in industrial and utility applications. Depending on system configuration and measurement requirements, accessories such as current transformers, Rogowski coils, and DC shunts enable energy meters to measure current across different ranges and electrical systems.
In this article, we introduce three core categories of energy meter accessories from Blue Jay and explain their working principles, key characteristics, and typical applications.
1. Low-Voltage Current Transformers (CTs)
Low-voltage current transformers (CTs) are widely used with AC energy meters to measure currents beyond the meters’ direct input range. They convert high primary current into a standardized, lower secondary current, allowing the meter to measure electrical parameters without carrying the full load current through its measuring circuit.
CTs are commonly selected according to the rated primary current, secondary output, installation dimensions, and required measurement accuracy. For example, 100 A, 200 A, and 400A current transformers can support different load capacities in industrial distribution systems, commercial buildings, and electrical panels. The CT’s secondary output must match the compatible input of the energy meter, such as 5 A, 1 A, or another specified signal.

2. Flexible Rogowski Coils
Rogowski coils are flexible current sensors designed to measure AC current through a conductor. Their flexible, typically air-cored construction allows them to be installed around conductors and busbars of different sizes, making them particularly useful in confined spaces, existing installations, and applications where conventional rigid CTs are difficult to fit.
Unlike conventional CTs, Rogowski coils produce an output proportional to the rate of change of current (di/dt). Their output therefore requires a compatible integrator or signal-processing circuit to obtain a signal proportional to the measured current. When used with energy meters, the coil’s output type and signal-conditioning requirements must match the meter’s input specifications.
Rogowski coils are well suited to retrofit projects, large conductors, and high-current AC measurement. Their flexible design can simplify installation without requiring the conductor to be disconnected in many applications.
3. DC Shunts
DC shunts are precision resistive components used to measure direct current (DC). When current flows through a shunt, it generates a small voltage drop proportional to the current. A compatible DC energy meter measures this voltage and calculates the current according to the shunt’s rated current and voltage drop.
DC current shunts are commonly specified by their rated current, rated millivolt output, and measurement accuracy. For example, a shunt with a 75 mV rated output produces 75 mV across its terminals at its rated current. The selected shunt must match the DC meter’s input specifications and the system’s current range to ensure correct readings.
Unlike AC current transformers, DC shunts can measure steady DC current. They are widely used in DC power systems, including photovoltaic installations, battery energy storage systems, DC distribution networks, and other applications requiring DC current and energy measurement.
Choosing the Right Energy Meter Accessories
Selecting the appropriate electric meter accessories is essential for reliable measurement and compatibility with the metering system. Low-voltage CTs are commonly used for AC current measurement, Rogowski coils offer flexible installation for AC applications, and DC shunts provide a practical solution for DC current measurement.
Blue Jay supplies these three categories of smart meter accessories, with customization options available for compatible metering products and project requirements. When selecting panel meter accessories, consider the current range, AC or DC system type, output specifications, measurement accuracy, installation conditions, and energy meter compatibility.
